E-Reader Policy

Borrowing an E-Reader Policy

Borrower Criteria:

To borrow an e-reader from Hesseltine Public Library, a patron must be 21 years old or older with a current library card in good standing with full borrowing privileges (not on probation, no fines or overdue items, no history of a delinquent account, and up-to-date patron information.

The library reserves the right to refuse service to anyone who abuses equipment, is repeatedly late in returning an e-reader, or who places the e-reader in the book drop.

Content:

A collection of e-books has been loaded on each e-reader from which patrons may choose.

Patrons may not download titles onto the library's e-reader from any source.  Changes made to the content on the e-reader will result in loaning privileges being revoked.  Any use of the e-reader for illegal purposes, unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material in any form, or transmission of threatening, harassing, defamatory, or obscene materials is strictly prohibited.  Patrons may not lend e-readers to a third party.

Check-out Procedure

E-readers must be reserved in person at the circulation desk.  They may be checked out for two weeks.  They may be renewed for another two weeks if there is not a waiting list.

A patron who borrow an e-reader is required to complete a Borrower Agreement with each checkout, acknowledging financial responsibility for lost or damaged equipment.  The patron will receive a copy of this agreement.

Library staff will verify that the e-reader is in good working order at time of checkout.

Return Procedure

E-readers must be returned in person directly to a staff member at the circulation desk during operating hours.  They may not be left on the desk if it is unattended.

E-readers may not be returned in the book drop.  Patrons who return an e-reader in the book drop will be charged a $25.00 fine for unnecessary risk to the device.

E-readers will be checked for functionality and accessories before being removed from the patron's record.

Overdue Fines and/or Fees:

Overdue fines are $1.00 per day up to a maximum of the total replacement cost for the e-reader and all accessories.  Overdue fines begin the day after the e-reader is due and continue through the day it is returned.  Overdue fines are only charged for days in which the library is open for business.

The customer is reponsible for the full replacement cost if the e-reader has been lost stolen, damaged, or otherwise not returned.

The patron will be charged replacement fees for any accessories not returned in the e-reader kit, or for items returned damaged.
